Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28
What is this: The world waste and void (v. 23)? If it were painted on a canvas instead of written in a book, it would look like a cartoon: Mountains shaking, hills rattling, valleys rolling -- yet, all in the dark. It could describe dusk in Berlin May 9, 1945 or night in Nagasaki August 10, 1945. Is it a dream? Partly. It's prophetic shock and awe. It's Jeremiah's vision of the world falling apart. He knows this disintegration will come soon. He's one of the prophets who warn the southern Hebrew kingdom of Judah that if they don't perform justice and cling to Yahweh-God, they'll be destroyed. The destruction came piece by piece at the hands of the Babylonians, ending violently in 586 BC.....

When Faithfulness Counts as Righteousness
Thirty-three miners are trapped below ground in Chile. They have been trapped for nearly a month, and it may be Christmas before they are brought out. So they have organized themselves into a disciplined cadre who work hard to support each other in those very trying circumstances. The eldest among them has become their chaplain and counselor -- sublimating his own doubts and fears, leading prayer and worship time, hearing their fears and worries. Another has become the medical officer, relying on advice from the surface and a few first aid courses he took decades ago. Others continue to work, clearing away the debris that falls into their safe room as the new shaft is dug.....

Jesus Searches For Us
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the Scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So he told them this parable: "Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices....

Jilted in Jerusalem
by Mark Moldrem
If the lost is lost, it is not found. If it is found, it is no longer lost. It is either in the state of being lost or found, one or the other. At least this is true for a sheep or a coin. But, what about a person whose life is a bit more complex than that of a sheep or a coin? Martin Luther understood the state of being for the Christian as being simul iustus et peccator ("at the same time saint and sinner" -- simultaneously lost and found). This is a dialectic that reflects the reality of human life coram Deo. On a timeline, one may be able to "date" one's salvation, whether that be described in terms of one's baptism (even as an infant) or in terms of being born again as an adult convert to the faith. Yet, there is a sense in which we struggle daily with our relationship with God, such that we....

At a very young age, Jamie discovered that he was excellent at math. While the other children were struggling through their multiplication tables to find the answer to a problem, Jamie knew immediately. The answer was in his head. He loved the patterns formed by numbers and he could discern beauty in math. When he was eight, Jamie was chosen to represent the school in a math Olympiad. It was like a huge examination of all the children in the country who were best at math, in a fun setting...

Object: a dictionary
How many of you have heard the word "ignorant" before? (allow answers) Does anyone know what it means? (allow answers) If you don't know what a word means, where should you go to look up its meaning? (allow answers) You would look in a book like this one. This book is a dictionary. How many of you have used a dictionary before? (show of hands) Dictionaries have long lists of all the words in our language. We use dictionaries to look up words we don't know so that we can find out what they mean....
