One of the problems inherent in visiting those in need of some sort, is knowing when to step back and when to step forward. This is probably less difficult if a professional organisation like Cruse (the bereavement counsellors) are involved, because they will have fairly strict guidelines which must be followed by their visitors and their clients. But things aren't quite so clear cut with church visiting.

Church visiting tends to hover over the boundary between professionalism and friendship. Sometimes this can be quite an uncomfortable position for both visitors and visited. Church visitors will usually have had some training, but are unlikely to be professional counsellors, and they usually visit on behalf of the church in a spirit of friendship rather than as professionals.

Because those visited are in need and may well begin to share a deep part of themselves in a confidential situation, some degree of intimacy may develop quite quickly. This may well evolve into genuine...
