At War With Myself
In a certain church, a woman was leading the congregation in the prayer of confession. She called the people to confess, reminding them of the sin within their hearts, and then all joined in reading the prayer of confession. She paused for the silent confession, and she kept pausing for a good long while. So long, in fact, that the people began to rustle as they waited for the next part of the service. It was awkward, and more than a few worshipers thought she had lost her place or mislaid the piece of paper with the proper words written on it. Finally someone was overheard to murmur...>> More |

COMMENTARY ON THE READINGS
Lesson 1: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67
This story is an excellent illustration of love, courtship, and marriage in the ancient world. Abraham has sent a trusted servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac. After going through several previously agreed upon conditions, the servant selects Rebekah. The extended family all agree, and Rebekah returns with the servant and entourage, where she meets her intended, they fall in love and marry....

So Just What Do You Want Anyway?
Call To Worship (based on Song of Solomon 2:11-13) The winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, all who are beloved by God, and speed into his presence.
Collect Lord, your world is beautiful. Your people are beautiful. Your word is beautiful. There is something for all of us, if we will just listen, look, and breathe....

Into Every Life
Frank put me in a bind. After he brought his wife Christine home from the hospital that autumn day, he told me the prognosis. "It's terminal," he said. "They removed the tumor, but the cancer has spread. She's going to have chemotherapy to buy her some time, but she probably hasn't got more than a year."
"I'm so sorry," I said. "How is she taking the news?"
"We haven't told her. I think it's better for her not to know. So I have to ask you not to mention it either. I don't think she could take it."
"Are you sure, Frank? Often it's better that people know so that they have time to make their peace with things and say their goodbyes."...>> More |

When All You've Got ... Is Gone
When our loss is so intense that we lose even our hope, we have a shepherd who can find it. This monologue makes real to the audience the feeling of lost hope.
Cast: A man who appears to be no younger than late thirties. He is honest, direct, and hovering between hope and hopelessness.
Setting And Costumes: This monologue works best with the actor dressed in simple clothes on an empty stage.
Props: No props needed

Missing The Bull's Eye
Object: some darts and a dart board
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along a game today that I played a lot when I was about your age. I always enjoyed the game, but I think that it was one of the hardest things I ever did. (show them the dart game) How many of you know what this game is called? (let them answer) That's right, darts. Have you ever played it? (let them answer) What do you try to do in this game? (let them answer) That's right; you try to hit the very center of the board, and that is called the "bull's eye."...
