A close encounter with God in all his majesty is a rare and special thing. The ability to open the doors for others to such experiences is given to only a few individuals. One such person is the Swiss theologian Karl Barth, who in the words of Alec Vidler,
makes me aware that theologians and preachers, and all of us, who prattle away so easily about God, ought to be silent, if God is in truth the Ineffable Mystery, the Mysterium Tremendum, the Ground of all Being, the Final Arbiter of all Existence.
It is said that toward the end of his life, Barth was once asked to sum up the Gospel in a single sentence. Drawing on all his learning and all his devotion to Christ, the great man replied: "Jesus loves me, this I know,
for the Bible tells me so."
