First Thoughts: This is a very familiar verse to most of us and a good reminder for Thanksgiving. Our culture teaches us to believe that we receive according to our effort and are often shortchanged! This attitude sows in us an attitude of bitterness and discontent. But in the season of Thanksgiving, when we are challenged to think of the blessings in our lives, very often we discover the things we're most grateful for are pure gifts. Our friends and family, our health, the air we breathe, the body that carries us day to day -- none of these things have we earned. We were gifted them just because we have an abundant, loving God who wants to give us good things. This passage reminds us how to experience the effortlessness of true blessing and (even more challenging) to accept it as one who is beloved of God.
